The Apple Jonathan is a medium-sized, red apple, whose crisp flesh is blushed with both green and yellow undertones. This apple variety has a juicy balance of both a sweet and tart taste. It is a popular variety and one of the most commercially-produced apple trees in the United States. The apples ripen in August and serve as great cooking apples. The tree requires 800 chill hours and needs a pollinator. For planting, apples trees prefer full sun and slightly acidic soil. At maturity they can reach a height and width of 10-25 feet.
